The Future is Bright for Dental Assistants
During this time period, my practice has hired about 12 students from the school's early placement program for dental assistants. The interns are second-year students who meet attendance and grade guidelines, and those instructor Lisa Theodore feels are ready to put their skills to work. CVCC students always come to us well prepared and ready to hit the ground running. From January through May, assistants spend required hours in the classroom and then come here in the afternoons for paid and non-paid internships. And if the number of students who are offered full-time positions in the workplace in which they interned is a barometer of success, then CVCC is indeed a success. Some of my best employees have come here from there. It's a true win-win for all of us.

About half of the students who have interned here as orthodontic assistants have become full-time employees, with the other half going onto college to further their career paths in dentistry.

I enjoy mentoring the students who work here, furthering their growth and education as well as creating an atmosphere what will give them the broadest possible exposure to orthodontics.

My staff works independently with the students, teaching them hand skills and techniques they will need for the job, from sterilization and set-up to how to prepare brackets to hand to me while working on a patient's braces. They are also trained on the latest technology in the field, like how to operate an intraoral 3-D scanner.

And the students also work closely with Invisalign invisible braces. Our practice is an Elite Premier Provider of Invisalign, putting us in the top one percent of providers worldwide. This gives the students specialized skills they can't get anyplace else.

Working alongside these bright young students is a good fit with my 25 years as clinical professor in the department of orthodontics at Case Western Reserve University, where I've been honored as instructor of the year, three times.

I would recommend CVCC's students to any potential employer, as they are consistently energetic, pleasant, dedicated, well-educated, and professional.
