4-15-20 COVID-19 Update to the Community
Hello students and parents.
I hope everyone is well!
My update today is specifically about our distance learning and recording of grades.

As for distance learning, I implore students to stay engaged and keep completing the lessons provided by their instructors.  Ultimately, if students continue to engage, the hours they complete remotely will count as hours of instruction to earn credit for their courses and prevent make-up days over the summer.  A second reason is that some credentialing bodies are now allowing remote instruction to count for certification hours.  Finally, continuing to engage will keep our students academically on-track and keep them mentally challenged.

I know that I am asking our students to continue to engage at the same time family stress levels are high.  Families with multiple children have to share time with a limited number of electronic devices, some of our students have jobs, and some technology challenges are hard to overcome.  For this reason, CVCC will not be issuing 4th quarter grades. Instead, the 3rd quarter grade will count for the 2nd-semester grade and be averaged with the 1st-semester grade to calculate the final grade.  Instructors have the academic freedom to raise a student’s 2nd semester grade based on the student’s engagement in distance learning.  We have been working with your child’s home high school and to ensure our grading procedures align with the local high school decision on grading.  I know there will be individual questions, so please submit those through our website by clicking the COVID-19 link on our home page.

I assure you that Cuyahoga Valley Career Center and our labs will reopen to students after the “Stay at Home” and “Closure of Schools” orders are lifted.  We will have to practice new social distancing measures which may include limiting the number of students in a lab at the same time or spacing out our work stations.  All of this planning is happening right now and our students’ safety is our first priority and their success is a close second.

Again, I implore students to keep working on their distance learning lessons to stay strong academically and mentally.

Thanks for your time and be well!
