2018 Educators Rising

1st Place in Children's Literature K-3

Congratulations Abbey Bugaj and Maddie Fichter!!!

Teaching Professions program at Cuyahoga Valley Career Center proudly acknowledges Abbey Bugaj and Maddie Fichter for earning 1st Place in the Children’s Literature K-3 Competition at the Educators Rising State Conference and Competitions in March, 2018 for their book:

Carbon & Eco--Ohio’s Two  GREEN Black Bears

Abbey and Maddie masterfully intertwine Ohio facts as the bears journey throughout Northeast Ohio—a fun way to learn! What makes this book so special is that Maddie painted every picture in the book and incorporated regional landmarks.

The author and illustrator read their book and presented to the judges in costume--earning 105 out of 100 points. Extra credit points were awarded because it was in braille. Using a hand-held braille labeler, Abbey and Maddie meticulously spelled the words and placed each braille tape on the pages.

Maddie and Abbey have made improvements by collaborating with the following experts:

o Improved braille output quality--Cleveland Sight Center (Sylvia Snyder)

o Audio file created for those with sensory disabilities--expertise of John Polace (CVCC's Media Technology)

o e-Book created and professional printing layout--expertise of Patrick Ruebenssol (CVCC's Graphic Imaging)

Upon completion, Abbey and Maddie are donating a book to the Sight Center and the Teaching Professions program at CVCC.
