On the Jouney: Becoming a Cosmetologist
Abigail graduated from Cuyahoga Valley Career Center in 2007 from the cosmetology program. During her time at CVCC, Abigail gained the hands-on knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the hair industry.

"I could talk for days about my positive experience at CVCC," Abigail smiles. Her instructor, Tina DeSantis, was a positive teaching aide and personal cheerleader for Abigail during her time at CVCC.

"Mrs. DeSantis was an outstanding instructor. She had a lot of experience in the hair industry, and she was able to translate that experience into our curriculum and readily prepare us for the industry, post-graduation," explains Abigail.

Abigail describes her instructor Mrs. DeSantis as vary committed to teaching , and very encouraging to her students and their endeavors.

Upon graduation from CVCC, Abigail entered a SkillsUSA competition in cosmetology, placing first in the state of Ohio. She then entered the national competition in Kansas and placed 18th nationally. This opportunity was presented to her through the career center. 

"The SkillsUSA competition and the encouragement from CVCC truly prepared me for the competitiveness in this field," Abigail says.

Abigail assisted in the opening of two salons, has worked for three hair care companies, and is currentl serving as an international artisitic director for ThermaFuse. Abigail had the opportunity to teach all over the U.S. Internationally, she taught in Trinidad and in Sweden. In April 2012, Abigail's dream of opening her own salon became a reality with the establishment of her very own salon, A.B.I. Styling Salon, located at 101 Front Street in Berea, in the upstairs portion of the building.

"This experience as a whole has enabled me to evolve from a shy young girl to a public speaker," Abigail says. "I love everything about my career. I enjoy relationship building and connecting with different people from different walks of life."

CVCC served as the launch pad that encouraged Abigail to jump headfirst into an illustrious career in the hair industry.

The cosmetology program at CVCC is approved by the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology. The skills that are covered prepare students to provide professional hairstyling, skin care, and nail maintenance treatments. Upon successful completion of the 1,500-hour course, students are eligible to take the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology licensing exam. The Cosmetology program enjoys a high rate of success with students, and a positive reputation with employers throughout the area. The program has a 95 percent pass rate for the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology licensing exam.

Cuyahoga Valley Career Center is located at 8001 Brecksville Road in Brecksville. CVCC offers a training program in cosmetology that is approved by the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology. For details, call 440-526-5200.
