A Day in the Life of a Firefighter/Paramedic

Sergio, a graduate of Cuyahoga Valley Career Center with a certification from the Adult Education EMT Basic Program, credits CVCC as the steppingstone that led him to his career with the Brecksville Fire Department. "The hands-on training I gained at CVCC really gave me the opportunity to explore my future career," Sergio explains. "Through CVCC's EMT Basic Program, I had the opportunity to experience firsthand routine daily squad checks, interactive training in an actual emergency setting, and clinical hours in the emergency room and on the job with different fire departments."

Sergio enjoys going to work every day with a fresh start. "A day in the life of a firefighter/paramedic is anything but typical," says Sergio. "Each day brings me to a new adventure, and I have no idea what will transpire in that time."

CVCC prepared Sergio for a career in this field by teaching him to think on his feet, to react immediately in an emergency situation, and by encouraging a teamwork atmosphere. "My instructor, Mark Dailey, was very motivated and enthusiastic about his career, and was also excited to teach us the material," Sergio explains. "Because of Mark's real-world training, I felt very prepared for my first career out of the EMT Basic Program."

Experienced medical professionals who are actively employed in local emergency medical services teach Cuyahoga Valley Career Center's EMT Basic Program. The instructors bring to their students real world experiences, clinical opportunities, and interactive learning during their education. The program offers clinical experiences with Marymount Hospital and several fire departments throughout Northeast Ohio. CVCC's pass rates for the NREMT exam consistently exceed the national and state average, as reported by NREMT.
