2016-2017 Syllabus

In the Level I Morning program, the students focus on developing maturity and basic skills in-house and in structured, highly supervised community-based sites. These skills are necessary to transition to the Level II Afternoon program where their skills are refined utilizing community-based work sites in area businesses with more independence and customer interaction.

Instructional philosophy The curriculum provides classroom and on-the-job instruction. It also develops fundamental knowledge, skills, abilities, attitudes and work ethic as well as aptitudes in social and employability skills. Hands-on as well as classroom instruction will provide the students the skills to work on an entry- level job.

Instructor expectations of student Each student is expected to show up, on time, dressed right, and ready to give her/his best effort each day. The student is expected to have a desire for community-based employment, have a willingness to work, ability to present a professional image in a customer service environment, and the ability to adjust to changes in work environments.

Students can expect that the instructor will be a caring, mature, adult role model who will help prepare them to be working members of society.

Major course goals

1. Develop competencies to prepare students for entry- level employment for jobs located in retail stores, restaurants, hotels, and nursing homes.

2. Develop academic skills in math and communications to enable the student to be as independent as possible.

3. Develop employability skills and social aptitudes that allows for success and advancement on the job.

4. Encourage the development of self-esteem through participation in leadership events (participate in DECA, an association of marketing students) and social and classroom activities.

School store operations

Level I (morning) will utilize Jennings Center for Older Adults, Burlington Coat Factory, Summit Point, ImagineIt Technologies, and Fastenal   for off-site job training.

Level II (afternoon) will utilize Heinen’s Supermarket, Days Inn Hotel and Regina Health Care Center for off-site job training.

Safety precautions

Appropriate attire for the workplace must be worn. (see below). No running, horseplay or practical jokes. Safety instruction will be given and students will demonstrate an understanding thru quizzes. No use of tools/equip unless instructed and proven mastery.

Uniform requirements

Students are required to wear school uniform.  Sales and Service requires a  CVCC polo shirt, work pants (khakis or similiar are fine), no athletic gear, sweats, or blue jeans (black jeans are fine). Low-heeled, close-toed, rubber-soled shoes are required. Males must be clean-shaven, and all must have appropriate hair control. No excessive jewelry and no facial piercings.

Attendance requirements

Students are expected to be here every day that CVCC is in attendance. In addition to parent/guardians calling the attendance line, the student is expected to exhibit mature job behavior by phoning and leaving a message in a professional way on my phone line, (440) 746-8250. The student will lose all points for the day if they fail to do so.

Assessment plan

Students will be evaluated frequently with emphasis on performance and improvement. Daily grade is worth a maximum of 10 points. Half these points are earned by showing up, on time, dressed right with a positive attitude and effort. The other half of the daily grade is based on the ability to perform a particular job with attention to safety, task procedure, quality, quantity, proper relationship to supervisors and peers, progress toward work goals, general work habits, and ability to follow classroom rules.

Periodic quizzesclassroom assignments, and self-evaluations will be given with varying point values.Notebooks must be maintained daily. Daily the student must bring to class his/her 3-ring binder and CVCC notebook/planner into which the student will record an activity and at least one thing learned. The notebook is worth 10 points weekly.

Grades will be assigned in accordance with the CVCC grade guideline as found in the CVCC student handbook   (A=90 B=80C=70 D=60)
