Senior Public Health and Safety
EMS Course Description


Public Health and Safety has been modified to meet the goals of local departments. 

The first semester will follow the Ohio Department of Public Safety's training for Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Students will prepare to take the National Registry written exam at the end of the semester. Students must maintain an 80% test average and obtain at least an 80% on the course final to be eligible to take the EMT exam. Clinical sites include time in the emergency room and with a local EMS service. 
 
The second semester students shall complete Firefighter I training. This training is conducted in conjunction with the University of Akron and local fire departments. Students shall participate in a live fire burn in the spring. Students completing the program will receive certification as a State of Ohio Level I and 2  Firefighter. Students must maintain a 70% test average for completion of the program. The class finishes with a three day live training burn at Portage Lakes Career Center.
 
Both semesters have attendance requirements as outlined by the State of Ohio Department of Public Safety. Some classes are held off site a various fire departments. All day Saturday classes are also part of the curriculum.
