ENGLISH 9 & 10

These courses have been designed with the needs of the at-risk population in mind. While they echo the academic standards set forth by the State of Ohio, they will be implemented with literature, reading material, discussion topics and other resources designed for the reluctant reader and writer.

These language arts courses are designed not only to provide the reading and writing skills required, but also to broaden the students' exposure to literature. Reading comprehension and basic writing skills will be a large emphasis. Students will develop their ability to read a selected passage, formulate ideas surrounding the passage, and effectively communicate ideas surrounding those ideas, both orally and in writing.

This class will integrate the study of writing and literature. We will start the year reading many short stories and developing reading skills. Then we will read several major works (possibilities include: Finding Fish, The Hunger Games, Speak, The Things They Carried, The Old Man and the Sea, and A Midsummer Night's Dream). Vocabulary development will be emphasized starting with a study of word roots. Students will write four major papers, one each grading period. We will conduct a review of the parts of speech, phrases and clauses, complete sentences, fragments, run-ons, and punctuation. Students will apply these grammatical studies to their writing. Each student will receive the individual attention he/she needs to help them understand the material.

This course will be focused on reading and writing. Students must keep all their writing assignments in a three ring binder (Writing Portfolio). We will average one composition every week. We will take most writing assignments at least through a second draft. Students will choose one essay per quarter to develop through a fourth and final draft. For the literature we read, we will emphasize discussion, analysis, and application of literary themes to our world. We will read novels, view plays and read shorter works to supplement these works. Films that reflect the themes may also be incorporated into the course. We will also read many supplemental articles that compliment what we are learning in Media Technology.
